Detailed Information

The Young Animal Protection Society Inc. (YAPS) is a non-profit organization based in Cairns, Far North Queensland, dedicated to rescuing and caring for abandoned and unwanted dogs and cats in the region. Established in 1985, YAPS operates the YAPS Animal Refuge, providing a safe haven for these animals until they find their forever homes. The refuge also offers dog and cattery boarding services, known as the largest and best in the area, ensuring the animals receive love and care while awaiting adoption.

YAPS is supported by a team of dedicated staff, volunteers, supporters, and members who work tirelessly to ensure the well-being of the animals in their care. The organization hosts events like the Dog of the Year YAPS Fundraiser, engaging the community in fun activities while raising funds to support their mission. Additionally, YAPS collaborates with local businesses like Garry Walker Real Estate to further their cause, showcasing a commitment to animal welfare and community support.

Animals at YAPS come from various sources, including strays brought in by the council’s Animal Control department and pets surrendered by individuals facing changing circumstances. The organization focuses on providing essential care, including desexing and microchipping, before rehoming the animals into loving and secure environments. With a Volunteer Management Committee, staff members, caretakers, and generous volunteers, YAPS continues its vital work of protecting and rehoming dogs and cats in need.
