Rex Rats Australia

'Sugar, Spice and everything nice' is the first impression that a Rex rat leaves on its audiences. And the Rex rat is all that and much more for people who own one or breed them. Charming appearance along with a soft and a plush coat have made it a hot favourite amongst all who love rats.

In 1976, the first Rex rat was bred by Roy Robinson of England. The very same year, the Rex rat was introduced to the National Fancy Rat Society which standardized it immediately. By 1983, it had crossed the Atlantic and became a much loved breed in the USA. 3 Rex rats came into the USA in November, 1983 and thereafter, they have spread out all over the world, getting love and attention wherever they have been.

Rex rats are extremely popular for their primary feature - the curly coat of fur on their bodies. The coat can be of any colour, the body can be of any shape or size but as long as the hair on its body is curly, the rat is Rex. Although competition stipulations require the rats' fur to be evenly dense and not harsh, there is no such requirement for a particular rat to be called as a Rex rat except that its hair has to be curly, whether dense or barely noticeable. Another wonderful feature of Rex rats are their whiskers, which are also curled, making them extremely adorable creatures.

At birth, all Rex rats have an almost sheep-like coat with dense curls. However, with age, especially after they molt into their adult coats, their curls tend to disappear, forming a wavy coat rather than curly. The thickness of the coat tends to vary with time and may become dense again, especially in colder temperatures.

If you are looking to breed Rex rats, then you are in for a treat because Rex rats are usually the more dominant species. This means that when bred with most other varieties of rats, the resulting litter will have at least a few Rex rats in it. However, normal rats in the Rex litter will not carry the Rex gene and therefore, cannot be termed as carriers of it. However, you need to be careful as to not let a male and female Rex rat mate as the offspring tend to become hairless rats or semi-hairless rats.

To tell whether a baby will be a Rex or not is quite difficult immediately after birth although the first signs are usually the whiskers. Curly whiskers mean that you are in luck.

Whether you are looking at competitions or breeding or simply having them around your home, buying a good quality Rex rat is of utmost importance and breeders are the place to go. Not only are they ideal for getting good quality Rex rats, they also provide vital information for care that pet stores might not be able to.

So what are you waiting for? Head out and get yourself your very own cute and cuddly Rex rat.
