Portuguese Sheepdog

The main function of the Portuguese Sheepdog, as the name suggests, is to protect and round up sheep. In short, the Portuguese Sheepdog is a workaholic. It is also effective as a guard dog and will protect family and owners when necessary. The breed is hostile towards strangers and, as a result, can be overly defensive. It is a territorial dog which would be a welcome addition to any home because of their instinct to guard and ability to be vigilant. The Portuguese Sheepdog is usually an appropriate companion and is generally considered safe around children. The breed's spirits are often high, which can result in a rewarding relationship.

History suggests the Portuguese Sheepdog has been in existence for about a century. During the 1970s, the breed was close to becoming extinct, but numbers soon grew as new breeders became aware of the Portuguese Sheepdog's beautiful appearance and positive traits.

General characteristics of the breed
A product of Portugal, the male Portuguese Sheepdog can be between 45 and 55cm tall, while the females measure between 45 and 52cm. The general weight of a Portuguese Sheepdog is between 12 and 18kg, which allows them to maintain a high work ethic. The coat is extremely smooth, while the hair is long and usually covers over most of both eyes. The breed can also come in a range of colours, including yellow, chestnut and grey. The Portuguese Sheepdog also features strong legs and shoulders and a long, curved tail.

As a family pet
The Portuguese Sheepdog is a hardened breed which will inevitably become quite attached and build a close bond with its owner/family. For this reason, it will respond aggressively to those who are lesser known to it and defend its owner fiercely. It is important to avoid contact between strangers and the Portuguese Sheepdog when possible.

If the breed is raised in the presence of children, they may behave well around them. The dog is quite independent, but at the same time, it enjoys companionship with an owner. The Sheepdog loves to protect its territory and does not bark frequently. It only barks when it views it to be necessary.

Training & activity
The Portuguese Sheepdog is best trained by experienced handlers. They can be difficult to train otherwise and do not necessarily always respond to traditional methods used to build dog obedience. The dog prefers to keep busy and is active. Don't expect the Sheepdog to be quiet and low on activity. It prefers activity and, as mentioned, thrives on protecting its territory.

Summary
Sources suggest the Portuguese Sheepdog is capable of living for about 12 to 13 years. They can be a fiercely loyal companion and are likely to develop a close relationship with the owner and family.  Care needs to be taken however, as your loyal and protective pet will be on the lookout for strangers constantly.
