Manx Rats Australia

Manx rats are tailless rats that were created as a pure mutation of the normal rat species. Honestly, that sounds worse than it actually is because Manx rats are just as common and normal as your everyday fancy rat. Tailless rats or Manx rats are born without the tail vertebra, which allows its posterior to sag. This feature develops the rounded rump that we are all so familiar with in Manx rats.

Contrary to popular belief, Manx rats are not created by simply chopping the tail off at a young age. These rats are in fact born without a tail and therefore, they have a nicely shaped posterior without any marks of violence.

According to various national rat bodies that organize competitions around the world, you will notice that they accept Manx rats in any colour just as long as their tails are missing genetically. Sometimes, a normal rat may be born without a tail, or with a tiny tail only. These are considered physically challenged rats and they, almost always, appear to have a problem in climbing or walking normally. This is because rats use their tails to balance themselves, something that Manx rats have learned (over the ages) to live without. A rat that's having trouble adjusting without a tail is a clear indicator that the rat is normal, just with a physical disability.

When buying a Manx rat, especially from a pet store, it is important to note how the rat carries itself around its cage as any sign of such discomfort of troubled movement may indicate that the pet store is trying to pass off a physically handicapped rat as a Manx rat.

Manx rats have a very likeable personality and are an almost instant hit with people. They are extremely friendly, to the extent of being 'Kissy', and have bundles of energy for playful activities. If you are looking to house a Manx rat with some other varieties, you will notice that the Manx rat tends to be the boss around the cage.

If you are looking to breed Manx rats, then you are in for a tough time. It is not recommended that newbies to breeding should look at Manx rats as the breeding process requires a lot of time and effort as well as medical expertise in some cases.

Due to the changed pelvic structure, female Manx rats have trouble in giving birth to young ones. Most females are sterile and can never get pregnant however, those that do may require a cesarean procedure to give birth. It is not quite as simple as just putting a male and a female Manx rat into the same cage and waiting for the kittens to pop out.

The process is quite complicated but if you are interested to know, the basics go something like this - mate a male Manx rat with a tailed female rat (any variety) whose father is a Manx rat. Complicated? Not quite! But you need to know that this might produce a few rats at most, in entire litters, which are Manx rats. Over the years, the number tends to increase as these Manx rats are further bred and the selective breeding process continues.

Tailless rats are extremely popular amongst breeders and owners alike and therefore, it has found many suitors willing to breed them for sale. However, when buying a Manx rat, it is extremely important to know the quality of breeder as well as the way s/he treats these rodents. Most pet stores tend to try and pass off poorer varieties as breeding pairs, which results in nothing but a poorer line of offspring.

So if you are looking to get one for you little one or for your home, it is always advisable to go to a reputed breeder listed on a number of official websites. If you are looking to breed, then do so only if you have some experience with breeding rats in general as Manx rats may be a lot of fun, but they are one of the hardest to breed.

Nonetheless, Manx rats are some of the most loved species of rats in the world and if you love rats and have a collection at home, then you must definitely add a Manx rat if you don't have one already.
