The Corgi was found in the western coastal region of Cardiganshire in Wales hundreds of years ago, though evidence of a dog resembling the Corgi was found as far back as 1,000 B.C. The word Corgi is derived from the Welsh words for “dog” and “dwarf.”
There are two types of Corgis, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. In their native Great Britain, the two were not declared separate breeds until the 1930s. Named for the region in which it was discovered, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi was initially used as farmhand because of its tremendous herding abilities. Though it is short in stature, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a competent and capable dog that can successfully herd cattle and sheep. It is still used for herding and guarding, but today it is most commonly known as a family pet.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is much longer than it is tall and has oversized ears that stand straight up, drawing emphasis to its short legs and small stature. This breed is approximately 25-30 cm high and 12-14 kg in weight, though it is stronger and sturdier than it may initially appear. Males are generally larger in size than females. It has a bushy tail and a short to medium length coat that can come in several varieties of colour. Some Cardigan Welsh Corgis may be black, blue merle, brindle, red or sable. It is an average shedder that needs weekly brushing to reduce shedding and maintain a healthy coat. Its fur is coarse to the touch, though it lies flat and smooth on the body.
Though the Cardigan Welsh Corgi has strong herding instincts, it is also a beloved family pet, known for its sweet disposition and loyal nature. It is not usually shy, but it may be initially reserved with strangers. It is affectionate with its family and prefers to always be in close proximity to its people. Bred to expend a great deal of energy on herding cattle, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi needs a moderate amount of exercise in order to be happy and healthy. The breed is fit and hearty, enjoying games of catch with a Frisbee or ball. Obedience and agility trials can also be a great fit for this athletic dog. Physical activities will help to ensure that the dog has proper mental stimulation, which will keep boredom at bay. An outlet for its energy will also help deter destructive behaviour.
This breed can live an average of 13-15 years or longer depending on its lifestyle and overall health. Breeders generally screen for genetic health problems, though the Cardigan Welsh Corgi may still experience issues such as cardiovascular or vision problems or hip dysplasia.
