How to choose a Pet

How to choose a Pet

Identify the needs, concerns, fears, and medical history (especially allergies) of everyone in your household. If you live alone, the task is easier. Evaluate your living space, lifestyle and budget. When choosing a pet take into consideration:-

  • Younger and/or active dogs need more space and more daily exercise than older dogs or those who don?t move around very much. If you have physical limitations that make it difficult for you to walk a dog(even a small one), a cat might be a better choice for you.
  • For safety, dogs and cats shouldn?t be allowed to run uncontrolled but should be walked on a leash or exercised in an enclosed area. Many cites have designated leash free pet walking zones, ring your local government body to find where these are.
  • Some pets, like cats, birds, and small mammals can adapt to any size living quarters. They may get enough exercise in a house or apartment.
  • Most animals are better kept indoors or in a suitable kennel when you are on vacation.
  • If you a part of a family, each member should decide (realistically) how much time he/she will spend with the pet and how much responsibility he/she will assume.
  • Be prepared to have your pet spayed. There are so many pets that must be put to sleep because nobody wants them.
  • Do not take a dog or cat away from its mother until it is at least 6-8 weeks old.
