German Wirehaired Pointer

German Wirehaired Pointer
The German Wirehaired Pointer was first bred back in the 1800s in Germany as hunting dog. They have a wiry coat and sport a distinctive beard. The colour can be liver, black, or either colour with white. Commonly, the head is a solid or nearly solid colour and the body is speckled, with saddles or large patches of solid colour.

There is a strong resemblance to the less-common Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, which has more abundant hair in its "mustache" and eyebrows. According to the AKC standards for the two breeds, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon also is very slightly smaller than the German Wirehaired Pointer.

Temperament
This version of German Pointer makes a good family dog and a working dog with tolerance for a variety of conditions. They ened a big yard and lots of exercise. They are loyal, easy to train and are good with children.

Health
Hip and elbow arthritis can be an inherited problem but are rare. As always, checkout your breeders breed stock history.

History
This gun dog was created by cross breeding various breeds, including the French Griffon, Pudelpointer, Short-Haired Pointer, and Broken-Coated Pointer.
