Field Spaniel

General Appearance
The Field Spaniel is a sturdy, medium-sized spaniel averaging 18 inches in height, and weighing 40 to 55 pounds. They are larger than the English Cocker, but smaller than the English Springer Spaniel. They are slightly longer than they are high. Coat is long, flat, glossy, and silky in texture, with feathering on the chest, body, and legs. Coat comes in solid liver, solid black, golden liver, liver and tan, black and tan, or roan.
Personality
An active, friendly dog, the Field is loving and eager to please. As with all spaniels they are great with children and other animals, but can be somewhat reserved with strangers. They love to swim so is water is available, they will often be wet. A muddy creek is just as preferable as a home swimming pool. They shed, are messy eaters and drinkers so if you are after a dog that will leave little mark on the house, consider another.
Conformation (Breed) Shows
Most Field Spaniels enjoy showing and are wonderful for anyone who wants an attractive medium-sized dog without a lot of grooming. Training a puppy for showing may begin as early as 8-12 weeks. As with any puppy training, care must be taken not to over-train or over-show.
Obedience Trials
Fields are very bright and active dogs and if not trained may well become bored and get into mischief. This same independent nature makes the Field a good hunting dog, that can make obedience training a challenge. If trained with positive methods at the correct age, a Field will be a happy, high-scoring worker. The natural reserve and placidity of Fields also makes them excellent for therapy dog work.
Agility
The sport of agility draws on the Field Spaniel's natural ability to move with speed and deftness through a variety of situations that test the dog's boldness and versatility, though they rarely are able to match the collies. Field Spaniels' playful spirit and desire to please make them particularly well-suited for this activity.
Tracking Tests
The Field Spaniel's natural desire to pursue a scent and his devotion to please their handler combine to make them an ideal tracking dog. Their tough coat, webbed feet, and love of water equip the Field Spaniel to follow the track into forests, through thickets, and across creeks, as the task demands.
Health
The Springer Spaniel is susceptible to a variety of genetic conditions including Musculoskeletal and autoimmune conditions. Buyers are recommended to research the breed stock history of the breeder. Beware of puppy mill and pet shop Field Spaniel puppies, this breed must be purchased from a reputable breeder to ensure the greatest possible care has been made to breed out undesirable health traits. Never purchase a spaniel of any kind from a pet shop, always seek out a reputable breeder.
