The Irish Horse, or Irish Hunter, is the result of a cross between the Irish Draught and the Thoroughbred. It is technically not an actual breed, but all Irish Horses have many similar characteristics.The breed is traditionally used for all purposes, from transportation, riding, and working the land. However, it is moving towards a riding horse type, as that is now the type of horse most in demand. Their natural athletic ability and fantastic jumping talents makes the Irish Horse one of the most versatile horses today.
The breed is known for being excellent in the show jumping arena, as well as competing at the highest levels of eventing, and are known globally for being some of the best fox hunting mounts in the world.Ireland produces a great number of Irish Horses each year, many of them selling for great amounts in the United States and Europe.
Breed Characteristics
The Irish Horse receives the sense and honesty of the Irish Draught and the athleticism, speed, and endurance from the Thoroughbred. They have excellent temperaments, being calm, yet lively when needed, and are very tough. They are naturally talented jumpers.The Irish Horse tends to fall into three types: light-weight, middle-weight, and heavy-weight.The horses have attractive heads that sometimes has a convex profile.They have a muscular croup with powerful hindquarters. The Irish Horse has a slightly-arched and muscular neck, a short, compact back, and long, sloping shoulders.The Irish Horse can be any color except piebald or skewbald and stand 15.3-17hh.
