Bearded Collie

Modified: 30-11--0001 00:00:00
The Bearded Collie or beardie is the traditional dog of the Scottish shepherd. Its is generally believed(and their appearance certainly suggests it) their ancestors include the Polish lowland Sheepdog and Old English Sheepdog bred with a variety local Scottish breeds
Temperament
The Bearded Collie was used to herd both sheep and cattle and is as a result hardy and reliable. They are instinctive herders, and wil herd and nip children, cars, cats? they may even try and herd a train or an overhead plane. They are independent and strong willed requiring patient training.
They require companionship, and will not do well if left alone for long periods, fretting and resorting to destructive behavior.. Known for their "bounce" when excited, they were bred to do this to be able to spot lost sheep in thickly ground grazing areas.
They require a large fenced yard and lots of exercise. They are barkers, so they may not be the most suitable dog in the inner city.
Their coat require regular brushing or it will matt and lead to skin problem, think 30 minutes to 1 hour of brushing per day.
Is this dog for you?
Perhaps. They are loveable, friendly and playful, but also require lots of work, companionship and care. DON'T buy one just because you saw "The Shaggy Dog"! These are mainly healthy dog that will live up to 15 years so a rash decision will stay with you a long time. If your circumstances do allow for this needs of this dog and you have the time to give them, the beardie will become a treasured member of your family.
