Pet Banana Spiders
Pet banana spiders are actually the less aggressive variety of the species, commonly known as Golden Silk spiders. The more venomous variety is the infamous Brazilian Wandering spider, which was even listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, as the most venomous spider in the world. Pet banana spiders are not meant for beginners, and even thought the Golden Silk spider is less aggressive, they do bite. If opting for pet banana spiders, it is only sensible to go for Golden Silk spiders, which are orb weavers, and are known for their large webs.
Like most spiders, it is important to create a comfortable and secure pet spider habitat for your pet banana spider. Since Golden Silk spiders weave webs, it is important that your include branches or sticks into the spider’s habitat, to allow it to create the webs easily. Their webs can range from 8 to 36 meters in area, so create a habitat accordingly. Basically, this species is not a good choice for people low on space.
Identified by its brown and orange banded legs, the males are much smaller than the females, and it is the yellow abdomen of the spider which has resulted in its name, the banana spider. These gentle creatures eat everything from locusts, moths, flies to butterflies and other forms of large flying insects. In case you have acquired one, a 5 to 10 gallon tank will suffice to keep an adult Brazilian Wandering spider. You will need to add about 2-3 inches of potting soil, Eco earth or peat moss as substrate, and décor can be plants, driftwood etc. You will need to create many hiding places within the container as they like to stay in dark places.
This variety of the pet banana spider eats everything from large insects to even mice and small lizards. Requiring temperatures ranging between 75 to 80? F and up to 80% humidity, these spiders are not recommended as pets for most people. Only experts who know what they are doing should keep this variety of spiders in captivity.
