Pet Spider Species
Pet spider species are quite exhaustive, and could range from pet jumping spiders, found in your backyard, to a pet Goliath bird eating spider, found in the wilds of Amazon, which also happens to be the world’s largest spider. But all these spiders are not appropriate as pets; in fact, some localities have restrictions on the pet spider species that are you are allowed to keep. So before you decide on a particular pet spider species, make sure it is permitted in your neighborhood and that you are not breaking any laws.
Now if you are beginner then you will need to choose a pet spider species which is docile and not very fragile. Small pet spiders can be very delicate, but they can also be easily found around the house. In case you are looking for large pet spiders, then a pet tarantula is your best bet. A pet pink toe tarantula or a pet Mexican red knee tarantula, are great options for newbies as both species are gentle and hardy. The pet bird eating spider mentioned above is an exotic species, which is not allowed in many states and requires expert handling and care.
Start off with a pet garden spider, such as the jumping spiders, or even a pet crab spider, which are harmless and quite small in size. They can be easily kept in small jars with air holes, and do not require extensive care. Pet wolf spiders make for an interesting watch, as they are hunting spiders, and do not make webs. These spiders tend to bite, but it is not as dangerous. If you like to pick according to color then you have brown pet spiders, green pet spiders, yellow pet spiders, black pet spiders and red pet spiders as the options you can choose from.
Amongst brown spiders, a pet brown recluse spider is not a good idea for beginners, as the spider is quite venomous and its bite can cause serious injury. Similarly a pet black widow spider is definitely not a good idea for most people, as they can be extremely dangerous, causing severe damage to humans, and in some cases even death. Other venomous or poisonous pet spiders would be pet hobo spiders, which might not kill you, but can cause severe local pain, and in some cases, tissue death and pet banana spiders, which rank alongside the deadly black widow spider. So they need to be handled with care, and do not make good pets for people who do not know how to deal with spiders.
If you are interested in a slightly larger variety of spiders, then a pet huntsman spider is a good option. Growing up to 15 cms wide, these spiders can get a little intimidating, though they are relatively harmless. A huntsman’s bite will only cause local pain and swelling, though in some cases the victim could suffer from nausea and headaches as well. Australian pet spiders are the numerous in terms of variety and size, with some popular species being the mouse spider, the huntsman spider, Sydney funnel-web spider, Daddy long-legs spider, Perfect spitting spider and many others. Not all of these are ideal as pets, though most are harmless.
Another popular category is pet desert spiders, which unlike popular belief do not include man-eating giant spiders. Camel spiders, which were made popular by military forces stationed in the Iraq, are in reality not as huge or dangerous as they were made out to be, and other species include desert tarantula, Funnel-web spider, Wolf spider, Green lynx spider and many others.
