Pet Spider Habitat
Pet spider habitat is entirely dependent on the species of your pet spider. In fact, certain species have very specific requirements regarding lighting, temperature and humidity. The whole point of creating a pet spider habitat is to emulate its natural environment. The closer you are in creating a pet spider habitat closest to its natural environment, the healthier and happier your pet spider will be.
When creating the ideal pet spider habitat keep in mind the size of your pet spider. A pet tarantula will require a 10 gallon fish tank, though a 5 gallon will also suffice, so calculate accordingly for your own pet spider, though there are some species which require far more space. Fish tanks are ideal for creating pet spider habitats, and a mesh top allows enough air into the container as well.
The basic points you need to keep in mind regarding pet spider habitat are:
- Size of container
- Temperature
- Heating/Lighting
- Humidity levels
- Substrate
- Décor
Now all these factors depend on the spider species, but most spiders do not require bright lights and need warm temperatures. As for the substrate, you can line the bottom of your pet spider habitat with potting soil, bed-a-beast or even Eco Earth. Make sure you create a special sheltered area for your spider, which it can use to hide in case of any threat. You will also need to keep a water dish, preferably shallow, within the pet spider habitat.
Even though decorating a pet spider habitat like an aquarium is not advisable, you can keep a variety of plants and rocks inside the container. Just remember that most spiders like to climb, hence you will need to be careful that they are not hidden behind too many plants, especially when you open the container for cleaning.
Keeping the pet spider habitat clean is another very important task. Now even though most spiders are not messy creatures, you will need to keep the habitat clean of dead insects, spider droppings, dead plants and other impurities. The water dish will have to be cleaned regularly to avoid growth of fungus or other bacteria, which could harm your pet spider. While cleaning, ensure that your spider is in a secure container with enough airflow. Do not be rough while handling the spider as some of them bite, and are poisonous.
A clean, safe and healthy environment is the only basic requirement for an ideal pet spider habitat.
