Pet Mice Breeding

Pet Mice Breeding

Pet mice breeding is a fun and exciting hobby that not only allows you to spend time with your favourite creatures, i.e. mice, but also gives you the opportunity to raise and sell them to customers and pet shops for some money. The art of pet mice breeding has grown a lot over the years and today, there are a number of breeders strewn across the world producing a number of different varieties of breeds.

Although it is quite unknown when the actual process of pet mice breeding started, there are vague ideas of the 18th century when mice were used for sport. Catchers would bring their haul over to people who would buy them and put them in pits along with Terriers. Onlookers would bet on the time it would take for the dog to kill all the mice. Eventually, these mice buyers decided that it would be cheaper for them to simply breed the mice instead of buying them each time. So began the art of breeding mice. Once the sport stopped, it is quite likely that these people continued breeding mice and soon, it became a popular hobby.

Pet mice breeding begins with a large space that is preferably indoors and well-ventilated. Since males tend to have a distinct musk-like smell, keeping many together might create a rather large-scale effect. The temperature for the mice needs to be ideal, neither too hot, nor too cold. You can install a heating and cooling device to maintain an approximate temperature between 22 and 30 degree centigrade.

Although the cage for mice are different and easily the most simple choice you will be making, remember that your pet mice breeding hobby will give birth to many young mice, which can easily squeeze out of small gaps in the cage. So buy, or build, one that’s appropriate.
Drinking water and rodent pellets are all your pet mice breeding hobby requires you to feed them.

The process of the actual pet mice breeding is quite simple although there is one essential rule that ensures that the process remains perfectly smooth and glitch-free. Remember to keep your cages restricted to just one male mouse only. More than one can result in fights and other females may also get hurt.

Another essential detail about pet mice breeding is that sometimes, breeders choose to keep each batch of babies separately. This means that when a litter of kittens (baby mice) is born, they are placed in a separate cage after they have weaned. The cage remains their home till they are old enough to be sold or used for breeding.

Any new litter is kept in a totally separate cage as mice tend to enjoy company but they may turn hostile to a new entity being introduced to their environment.

Pet mice breeding is quite a fun hobby even if you have commercial interests in your mind. There are many people looking adopt these creatures for their homes and as gifts for their children. Pet shops will lineup outside your breeding area for these cute creatures and whether you choose to breed specific species or just randomly, there will always be a lot of takers for your pet mice breeding project.
