Birds as Pets
Mankind has a long history of domesticating birds as pets. Many thousands of years ago, the Chinese were domesticating colourful varieties to have as pets, this discovered in the artworks from the times of the ancient Chinese. Possibly even earlier than this, birds such as falcons and cormorants were domesticated not as pets, but as hunters.
Today in the western world, the bird is the choice of pet for many households and it’s not hard to see why – there is just so much variety.
Companions OR Hobby Animals.
Some breeds are exceptionally friendly and love company. They will sit and “talk” happily with their owner, perch on their shoulder etc,(Editor – I know a lady with a Macaw who sings it to sleep at night, apparently it likes nursery rhymes such as ‘London Bridge”. She was out with it once at a country market in Bangalow Australia when it was spooked and flew off and would not come down from a large tree. The fire brigade were called.... and eventually a dashing young fellow sand it down. True story)
Other birds are less social, but the delight is in watching their behaviour in large aviaries. You can get a bird for a pet that is thus a lot or a little work.
ON that note, researching what is involved with a particular type and breed of bird is essential as the care needs differ so wildly. Some require constant attention, and variety of surroundings and food or they get bored, distressed and self mutilate. Some bond with one owner, and fret if the owner is not there. Some birds, may live for more than 100 years!
So don’t be fooled into thinking choosing a bird as a pet needs less consideration than choosing a dog or cat as a pet, just as much planning is needed. So read on, and happy bird choosing!
